Job Summary
Responsible for decontamination, cleaning, processing, assembling, packaging and sterilization of supplies and equipment dispensed by Central Service. Must be conscientious with regard to procedures and capable of accepting pressure assignments, clerical assignments and all duties relative to the department. Willingness to accept new ideas and to learn duties of the position. Participates in the department’s performance improvement activities.
Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas
- Ensures proper operation of autoclave units prior to use on a daily basis.
- Responsible for running biological and chemical tests at beginning of every day shift. Records results in appropriate log.
- Inspects gas and steam autoclaves for visible signs of malfunction and reports to Surgical Services Manager.
- Processes or oversees, all contaminated instruments and supplies returned to Central Service.
- Uses knowledge of sterilization principles to correctly wrap or package items for sterilization.
- Processes all items appropriately using either Sterrad, steam sterilization or low temperature terminal sterilization.
- Maintains appropriate spore testing on routine basis and documents results as required.
- Processes department supply charges, and all other clerical work related to the department.
- Works closely with Surgical Services Manager and assists with training and in-services for new and long term employees.
- Able to work closely with others and oversee work tasks to orientees.
- Applies aseptic technique in daily work assignments. General cleaning of department surface areas, racks, shelves, storage cabinets and all storage areas.
- Stores all supplies and equipment in appropriate location.
- Notifies Surgical Services Staff when instruments or equipment is/are inoperable or out for repair.
- Cares for instruments, syringes, needles, sterile supplies/equipment, and is knowledgeable in their usage.
- Assures tray assemblage, proper packaging and preparation of all applicable supplies for sterilization. Monitors sterility dates on supplies.
- Properly loads, operates and cleans all sterilizers and all general equipment.

- Maintains preventive maintenance procedures and control procedure on electrical heating and cooling units.
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
- Receives and delivers surgical supplies and fills requisition requests.
- Monitor and Orders department supplies from materials department and outside vendors when needed.
- Works closely with Central Service Manager to maintain appropriate inventory levels of stock.
- Performs other related duties as may be assigned.
- Participates in departmental performance improvement activities.
