Job Summary

The duties of a Scribe are to assist the physician with electronic documentation in the EMR and other information pertaining to the patient’s encounter. Scribes do not participate in providing patient care. Participates in performance improvement activities. Maintains regulatory agency requirements, hospital policies and procedures and standards.


Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas

  • Physician order entry.
  • All orders are communicated by the physician.
  • Scribes do not participate in any patient care and should refer all requests related to patient care to the responsible physician or nursing staff.
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to co-workers and physicians.
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
  • Treats patients and families with respect and dignity.
  • Maintains a good working relationship with all hospital departments.
  • Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
  • Documentation meets current standards and policies.
  • Answers telephone in a polite manner and communicates information to the appropriate person.
  • Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.


Regulatory Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Completion of a medical terminology course or one year*/ medical terminology experience in a clinical setting, is required.
  • Minimum one-year experience as a scribe, preferred.
