Job Summary
Assists with basic patient care based on individual patient needs within the scope of practice under direct supervision of the registered nurse. Maintains environment that is prepared for patient care.
Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas
- Provides supportive care to the Emergency Department patients under the direct supervision of the registered nurse or physician. Performs approved procedures per policy.
- Takes, documents and reports vital signs. Reports abnormal results immediately to registered nurse.
- Takes height and weight measurements.
- Places ECG electrodes and attaches ECG monitor correctly.
- Assists with setting up oxygen per instructions.
- Assists registered nurse and physicians with assessments, examinations and treatment.
- Records I&O, collects specimens.
- Notifies appropriate licensed staff when patient complains of pain.
- Observes, documents and reports patient condition and changes in condition to the registered nurse.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patients served. Able to interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group.
- Performs other duties as inserviced, including crutch walking, dressing changes and assisting physician with splint or cast application.
- Performs and assists with technical skills as defined in scope of practice.
- Receives and carries out instructions accurately and promptly. All patient care activities are delegated and supervised by the registered nurse.
- Transports patients, as necessary. Assists with moving, ambulating and lifting patients.
- Documents patient care performed, including vital signs, bedside care and observations.
- Adheres to hospital policy addressing standard precautions, safety regulations and guidelines.
- Communicates in an effective and efficient manner with all documentation, and with all co-workers, patients, visitors and physicians.
- Performs and assists with technical skills as defined in scope of practice.
- Documents patient care performed, including vital signs, bedside care and observations.
- Adheres to hospital policy addressing standard precautions, safety regulations and guidelines.
- Communicates in an effective and efficient manner with all documentation, and with all co-workers, patients, visitors and physicians.
- Responds to patient and visitor questions and needs immediately and within established standards.
- Documents patient care performed, including vital signs, bedside care and observations.
- Adheres to hospital policy addressing standard precautions, safety regulations and guidelines.
- Communicates in an effective and efficient manner with all documentation, and with all co-workers, patients, visitors and physicians.
- Responds to patient and visitor questions and needs immediately and within established standards.
Regulatory Requirements
- High School graduate or equivalent with one (1) year experience in acute hospital setting or in ambulance; EMT certification preferred.
- Current BLS Certification.
- Current EMT Certification (preferable).
